Self-taught guitars may benefit from some lessons from a qualified teacher.
Have you been teaching yourself to play the guitar but are not really making a huge amount of progress? Perhaps it is time to invest in some guitar lessonsThere is only so much you can teach yourself about playing a musical instrument. Yes, there are numerous different books and manuals designed to give you complete guidance on how to become a fantastic musician. But think seriously about this. Why are there so many music teachers fully dedicated to teaching the guitar if all you needed to do was follow a manual? Obviously there is a lot more to it than reading a set of instructions.
Most music schools offer guitar tuition and many other private music teachers are also available. Lessons can be taught individually or in group format and it is up to you to decide what suits your needs best. If you do opt for group lessons, be sure to ask about the overall level and standard of the class. A group that is too basic will not be much use, while a group that is at too high a level can get intimidating and you can be left behind quite quickly. Speak to the teacher in advance and explain or demonstrate your current level of ability. They can then advise you what the best course of action is.
Formal music lessons are a great way to focus your time and energies. It can be difficult to make the time to practice an instrument, but knowing there is a weekly lesson on the horizon means that you will be sure to get your practice in. The structure of the actual lessons themselves, and the content over the course of the term, will make sure you are following a cohesive approach to the guitar. Sometimes when tackling something on our own it is difficult to know in what order areas should be tackled. Frequently you find out too late that one thing should have preceded another. When you attend a qualified music teacher you know that won’t happen.
Finding out about the music teacher is also important. You need to assess if you are going to be happy and comfortable with this person. Knowing about their qualifications is also necessary. The best teacher to attend is the one that is not only a good guitar player, but is also a qualified teacher that has studied music education. This person will have put serious time and effort into relating their own playing ability to others. If there are no guitar teachers at your nearest music school ask around and see can you locate a private teacher. Many music shops or guitar shops will know where individual teachers are based and could put you in touch.
So what are you waiting for? Step away from the guitar manuals and teach-yourself books, and move to a more serious level. Find a good guitar teacher and start to make real progress with your playing. Then who know where you will end up!
