Salsa Dancing: Spice up your life!
Recently I was sitting in a bar with friends and wondering exactly what I was going to do for exercise in my new ‘committed to getting fit regime’. I wanted an exercise regime that was fun and motivated, rather than being stuck to a boring treadmill for the next few weeks, or however long it would last. The answer was actually right in front of me, as occupants of the bar began to clear away some of the tables and join hands with their partners. Suddenly, a strong Latin beat blasted from the radio and the couples began to swirl and dip and dive around the room. When I asked the barman what was going on he explained that it was Salsa night at the bar. Salsa dancing was something I had never considered before but I decided it would be a step in the right direction. I really enjoyed my lessons. I found them to be a great work out and the perfect excuse to hang out on the dance floor where I hope to one day run into a lonely Spanish man.
Before I took my first salsa classes I decided to look into the history of Salsa Dance itself. Salsa dance is a dance of Latino origin, fast and fiery. However, as a dance it is really a mixed bag of creations. Salsa Dance began officially in Cuba, but it takes many of its elements from English and French country and traditional dance as interpreted by the people of Cuba with Latino rhythms. The dance also mixed with the African Mambo to create the fabulous drum beats that you hear throughout Salsa music. The music is a mixture of the Cuban Són music and the Latin Merengue. All of these influences mixed together to create the Salsa Dance sensation. However it wasn’t until Salsa was brought to New York in the early 20th century that the dance received its name. Anyone who has even a little Spanish will know that the word ‘Salsa’ means ‘sauce’. While dancing to the intense rhythms and moving through the motions people would shout out the word ‘Salsa’ as a means of expressing their enjoyment. Soon it became the dance’s official name.
Any Salsa dance class which you partake in will require a high amount of energy, this class, based upon flowing and powerful dances has a history that you will feel as you learn how to dance it.
