Join a Yoga classes to increase and maintain flexibility as you get older
We all know that as the body gets on in years it simply does not always perform the way it used to in younger life. Getting older certainly has plenty of perks, as wisdom, experience and a greater perspective on what’s important in life will ultimately bring greater enjoyment and fulfillment. Many people have much more free time as they progress in life. Not just when they reach retirement age, but often well before, when the pressures of small children and a busy family life ease off. Frequently with much more available time, and hopefully more disposable income, people have the chance to go explore the world and what it has to offer. But if you intend living life to the full you need to be able to keep up with the pace.
Making sure you maintain your flexibility and strength is a key factor to enjoying your life. There is nothing worse than wanting to do something and being limited by your own inabilities. So what is the best thing you can do if stiffness is setting in? Yoga.
Do you often wonder how so many older people seem to be involved in hill-walking? Obviously they have a much more flexible lifestyle than those who are younger with dependent children and busy weekend schedules. But merely being more available does not account for the ability to trek up mountains for hours on end. So why are older walkers generally seen striding past younger walkers? Many are also yoga enthusiasts. Making sure you are flexible, strong, and your body is ready to endure long periods of exercise, is crucial for hill-walking. And what better way to develop and maintain these abilities than yoga.
Classes in Yoga can vary across a spectrum from relaxation and meditation to a highly energized class that will rival a good gym work-out. Many classes lie somewhere in between and give a good blend of the holistic approach to the body, as yoga is known for, while providing challenges for the individual person to work towards. It is important to know exactly what approach the teacher and class will have and be sure this is in keeping with your needs and expectations. As with any good class, the student should be challenged to some extent, otherwise what is the point of paying for tuition? But be sure to get some overview of the approach used and ask for more details if a specific type of yoga is mentioned. Check if this style is suitable for your current level of ability, and also if it is going to help get you to where you want to go.
Finally, when you do sign up for your Yoga class, make sure to carry this through your week in between classes. There is no point working on good posture in a class to go home and fall back into the bad habits that are creating the stiffness in the first place! Hopefully your new yoga class will energize both your mind and body, and with a bit of luck you’ll meet like-minded individuals and open up a more flexible world for the future.
